To get started, you need 3 main pieces of equipment: a waist belt, a bungee line, and a pulling harness. Comfort and safety for you and your dog are really important when starting this activity, so it’s important to use dedicated equipment specifically designed for pulling.
Here are some of our favorite equipment choices for getting started in your dog-powered journey:
Waist belts
MuttRuk
Muttruk Pacer Wasit Leash
A waist leash(with bungee line included)- newly released option from a very cool company. A lightweight, minimalist option for light to moderate pullers (pulling in a pulling harness-which is gentler for many dogs than how they pull on a collar while being restrained!). This great option comes with a bungee leash and will get you ⅔ of the way started cani-walking or canihiking around the neighborhood or on the trails. Also a great option for dogs already used to running with their person. This can be worn alone or in addition to a treat pouch, including our favorite the MuttRuk Sidekick Hip Pack, or a backpack/daypack.

Non-Stop Dog Wear
You really can’t go wrong with any of their products. All of these options can be used with or without the legstraps except for the Lyope.
Trail Light Belt (can be used with or without a dog; has lots of storage; comfortable for running, hiking, or skiing; lightweight and breathable)

Trekking Belt (padded and easy to use; removable leg straps; some people do not like the hook on the front; can be hot in the summer)

Ferd Belt (a great everyday belt that can also go on long hikes; sturdy enough for very strong pullers while being lightweight)

Loype Belt (designed specially for skiing, but can also be used to walking and hiking)

*Honorable Mention*
Ruffwear
Trailrunner
Easily available and usually pretty user friendly. A good option for light use.

Harnesses
Non-Stop Dogwear
Line Harness
A favorite for clients. A secure, comfortable harness that can be purchased with or with a handle or places for velcro patches. This can be a multifunction harness worn while pulling, loose leash walking, or roaming off leash.

Freemotion Harness
A top quality, dedicated pulling harness. If you’re hooked on dog powered sports and want the ultimate fit for comfort and speed, this is a great option.

Rush Harness (New release)
A promising new release for a quick start pulling harness fitting a variety of body shapes.

Second Skin Harness
The second skin is my go-to harness to get started with dog-powered sports. It fits a variety of body types and because of its flexible fit, grows well with dogs if you get one for a young teen dog. It must be used under tension, so is not a good option if you want a harness you can leave on your dog to run off leash or to transition from pulling to LLW and settling on a patio.

Distance Harness
Another great option to get started with dog powered activities. This half-back harness is an economical, custom fit and highly durable harness for a variety of activities. It can be used for regular walks or pulling (it doesn’t have to be under tension), so is a great option for outings that are multipurpose. Since the neck hole is custom sized, it's best for dogs who are done growing (unless you want to buy another harness)

Bungee Lines
Non-Stop Dogwear
Touring Adjustable Leash
A high quality versatile bungee line for pulling or regular walks and runs. It can also be used as a tether. It’s approximately 2 meters in length, part bungee and part regular leash with a traffic handle.
Full Bungee Leash
My favorite dedicated pulling bungee leash for experienced pullers. This is best for dogs who are responsive to cues without reliance on the leash to guide them physically (like to move them off the trail or stop them from chasing a squirrel). It offers maximum comfort for pulling, but less “control” for the handler who needs to use the leash to physically move or remove a dog from a situation. The 2 meter length is best for running or hiking, while the 2.8 meter is better for Bikejoring or Scooterjoring

Howling Dog Alaska
Leash with bungee
High quality bungee leash, perfect for jogging, walking or hiking. It is 5.5’ unstretched. It gives an optimal shock absorption while still giving you control with the line.

Skijoring line
A longer option (8-9’) of the above leash that's more suitable for skijoring and bike/scooterjoring.
